DEBORAH MAGONE, a native of Rochester, N.Y. hopped on a plane to L.A. at the urging of an A & R rep. from Epic records N.Y. who said that, ".....she has the potential to become something very BIG!" At a mere 5'3'' (5'4" on a good hair day) at first glance this hardly seems likely. However, listener beware! This little " Rock Blues Mama" can belt a tune in the style of Big Mama Thornton , Janis Joplin, & Ann Wilson , or soothe your soul in the vein of Billie Holiday. Often compared to Joplin, Deborah blends it all together to form her own "whimsical and walloping" vocal style.
Singing since she could talk, Deborah used to knock on neighbor's doors & ask them to listen, while she stood on the kitchen stool and sang Disney's "Old Yeller," (her favorite tune at 4yrs. Young). "When I was 11 years old I carried my pocket radio everywhere I went, listening to Rochester's favorite R & B station and Janis. Every weekend I looked forward to hearing The King Biscuit Flour Hour! Finally I saved my allowance & got my first guitar. It was a Saturday afternoon. I came home with my brand new acoustic guitar. It was a Dorado, Gretsch , sunburst yellow & red with flowers & birds on the scratchboard. I turned on the t.v. & there was Elvis Presley in one of his "hula" movies with the same guitar! It was an omen!"
At 17yrs. young, Deborah began her professional career, playing & singing illegally at a local Rochester club with "After Sundown," a country rock, blues & boogie band. Soon afterward she helped form "Wired" a high energy, hard rock band doing Rush , Zeppelin , Heart & Van Halen among others & originals . Once one of the finest new rock bands emerging out of New York state, Wired was chosen #1 rock band out of over 200 bands by the listeners of Rochester's WCMF radio. This led to inclusion on that station's "Homegrown Album," side one , cut one , the keen interest of major record companies, as well as concert appearances with some of the top rock acts (i.e. Peter Frampton, Talas) of the day, TV & radio interviews, & the distinction of being the first female rock singer to ever play Attica State prison. "Truly a captive audience!!"
At the advice of Epic Records, Deborah went to L.A. & soon joined Grammy award winner, Janis Johnson from " A Taste Of Honey", ("Boogie Oogie") while also gigging solo. Shortly afterward Deborah, co-starred, sang & got to show off her black belt in a very " interesting " film that won a gold medal at the Houston Film Festival for director/producer Jackson Bostwick (Flash Gordon) & cast. A few bands, music & acting gigs later, tiring of the L.A. "pay to play" rock music scene, Deborah retreated to her karate dojo to continue teaching & start a family.
A few years & a lot of diapers later, after marriage , two beautiful children, & many years of homeschooling , she’s back in beautiful Upstate New York for quality of life & the great music & players . "It's a passion, an integral part of who I am."
Deborah can be seen (and heard) belting out her tunes acoustically & with her new rock band " The Deborah Magone Band " which offers up some punching bluesy Rock that'll shake you like a California earthquake ! Hang On !!
